Targeting specific populations: This has worked well for HCM activities particularly for the in-school youth in the Abstinence Chill program and the formal and informal employees in worksites with the ‘Be faithful’ messages. The Chill program targets 10-12 year old children while the ‘Be faithful’ messages
Working with local leaders and government officials – First approaching local leaders such as chiefs and Ministry of health officials such as Public health officers and informing them of the intended activities has aided in clarifying expectations and working as partners to target the resources to underserved communities e.g. working with the Public health office in Nyando during the cholera outbreak addressing the areas with limitation in mobilizing the community. HCM outreach staff in Nyanza helped bridge this gap by working closely with the PHOs mobilizing the community through barazas, public address at market centers and at the water sources.
Partnering with other organizations e.g. involvement in APHIA II and the BCC steering committees avoids replication of activities e.g. other organizations have school programs and being aware of these helps in focusing resources on existing gaps hence targeting schools that do not have the program.
Working with local organizations utilizes and enhances the capacity built in terms of community based organizations and community resource persons such as CHWs. This fosters community ownership of health concerns and solutions and also exponentially increases the number of interpersonal interactions possible which would be greatly limited if relying only on HCM staff as resource persons.
