| Basic Care Package | Purpose and scope The primary target group for the Basic Care Package (BCP) project is people living with HIV and AIDS, who know that they are HIV positive. UNAIDS estimates that there are over 1.3 million Kenyans currently living with HIV/AIDS.1 According to Emergency Plan reports, nearly 800,000 Kenyans received HIV testing between October 2003 and March 2005, suggesting that at present, approximately 17-18% of Kenyans know their HIV status.2 With only 19.7% of those with advanced HIV infection receiving antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, and with only 68% of facilities offering some package of care and support services,3(Persons Living with HIV) PLWHs need simple, practicable solutions for improving their health and extending their lives. The goal of BCP therefore is to reduce morbidity and mortality among PLWH through the prevention of opportunistic infections, and to help them live longer and healthier lives. 1 2006 Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic, UNAIDS, P. 385 2 Kenya Country Profile, Office of the United States Global AIDS Coordinator3 Kenya HIV/AIDS Service Provision Assesment Survey, National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development, Ministry of Health, ORS Macro, November 2005 |
