| Background | A member of a cultural troupe in Narok explains how the female reproductive system works during an adult education class. Cultural dancers trained under the APHIA II Rift Valley program are educating their communities about HIV and AIDS. APHIA II stands for AIDS, Population, and Health Integrated Assistance Project II, this being the second round of comprehensive programming for health in Kenya. APHIA II is a joint project between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Government of Kenya. Each region responds to meet the needs of the populations. In the Rift Valley (RV), APHIA II began in June 2006 and will continue through December 2010. The project aims to increase service access and use, while promoting healthier behaviors among most at risk groups and the general population. Project activities are carried out at both the health facilities and in the community and involve a high degree of collaboration with all relevant GOK partners and stakeholders within the province. The core elements of the project are increased networking, facility-community linkages, and sustainability. |
