| Improving TB treatment in Embu Prison |
Prisons are some of the congregate settings that present a lot of opportunities for increased transmission of diseases such as tuberculosis. Unfortunately, adequate interventions have not been put in place to respond to these risks. It is in this regard that joint efforts between APHIA II Eastern and the Ministry of Health together with the management of Embu Prison has left a lasting mark in the institution. The institution relies on the Embu Provincial General Hospital for the provision of healthcare services. With only one bus available as the means of transport for the whole institution, this meant that transporting prisoners to the hospital for medication was almost an impossibility. This has dealt a tragic blow especially to the TB patients, in need of daily medication leading to a high defaulter rate, sometimes tragically to death. It is alleged that the warders due to ignorance, often order the prisoners to consume their entire weekly dose in one day to avoid the inconvenience of visiting the health facility on a daily basis. |

Work at the Nyambene District Hospital is complete while Embu PGH and Kianjokoma Health Centre are on course. The first phase of renovations at the Meru District Hospital were complete and service delivery is now enhanced. |
